Literacy Unit of Work: Balanced Argument - Should the Vikings have invaded England? (3 complete weeks and Activities) This unit of work uses the text genre balanced arguments to discuss whether or not the Vikings should have invaded England in easy to follow way. Students are taught to learn actions for conjunctions, know the difference of open and closed questions, take part in a hot-seating activity and identify features of a balanced argument. There are also SPaG starter activities mainly aimed at year 6 objectives. The second week focuses on slight tweaks to the first week and the children are guided through writing a balanced argument on should monasteries keep the country's wealth? Finally, the children write a balanced argument independently about does money buy happiness? This unit of work includes all 3 stages of Pie Corbett's teaching sequence of work (imitation, innovation and invention). Students are guided through reading comprehension that uses the complete questions from a modified 2017 Reading SAT paper through the different strands of reading comprehension. We also use the CGP SPaG activity books to supplement the SPAG curriculum. This could easily be changed or use other paper resources with SPaG activities. Group A is the higher ability children leading through to group E.
