Reading and writing is a ‘silent’ process for many children. When first learning they do not possess the ability to imagine what the written word is telling us. They have many, many other skills they have to master before they can get there. This powerpoint is aimed at beginner readers and to try and put some fun into reading by manipulating the sounds available to them. They look at the picture and then have three letters to make a word that matches it. With a picture to help young children visualise what they are reading, they have a purpose to reading it too and not just going through the motions. This powerpoint is designed to be used independently, but can obviously be used as a teaching aid too. I made a lot of resources for traditional tales that can be printed off and laminated. Then the idea was for the children in my class to access these independently, either by using pegs to match the answers or other ways to work out the answer like using bottle tops with letters wrote on them. These resources are available in my shop. This resource is exactly the same as the one you can print off with the bottle tops but it is for use on the interactive whiteboard. Again, children can access this independently as it does say when you have the wrong answer or it can be used to model the printed version. All they need to do is click on the correct bottle top to indicate which letter comes next in the CVC word. I have left on my Bitmoji clapping at the end of each word’s slides, this can of course be left or edited to put your own there or just take the slide out completely. It is a powerpoint that you can edit if you need.

A very simple comprehension activity for children who are just learning to read. Each board has a picture and three words. The child should use a peg to place on top of the correct word that matches the picture. This way, they are reading lots (each word rhyme to help the child read them all) and the peg helps their fine motor skills too, which in turn helps with writing.

I created all these resources to be used in my class when they start in reception. The idea behind this resource is to allow the child to make the word that matches the picture and all the resources needed to do so are there to hand. The resource has all three letters to make the CVC word attached using a split pin and the child can move these around to make different combinations of the letters, hopefully they will be able to hear the initial sound, middle sound and end sound to the word and therefore be able to place them in the correct order.

One thing I did notice though, is that there are not many phonic resources you can buy that will help children. There is a lot of basic things of course but they are all limited. This resource I made is a brilliant way to help children who are starting to learn to read basic words. I have created these resources due to having a very creative class. The idea here is to read the sentence given and then draw a picture that matches. This aids comprehension skills as well as fine motor skills to aid writing after. A win win. The children loved the rewards they would receive once they have completed three or more. A great way for young children to learn how to read, to learn phonics is to manipulate letters and sounds. Here is a way to allow children to ‘play’ with sounds in order to make words. Early years teachers (Kindergarden) will be able to use this resource to see if children can spell words and read them. The idea here is to cut out the resource and fold it in half. Then laminate them. The extra part to this that you will need are bottle tops, where you have wrote letter sounds on the top. Once laminated, children can then use these bottle tops to place them on top of the circles to create simple CVC words that relate to my other resources from We’re going on a bear hunt. The eight words are: dog, wet, mud, big, brr, mad, bed, sad

These resources were created to aid comprehension within my class. The simple sentences have sound buttons on each word that is decodable. They also have simple ‘tricky words’ within this sentence. The idea is for the child to read the sentence so they understand what it says and then they use a peg and place it on the correct picture that matches what they have just read. The idea with the pegs is to aid fine motor skills and therefore aid their development where writing is concerned. These resources have proven very popular with the children who are able to read within the class, especially when coupled with a reward for reading 3 or more. Little Wandle phase 2 Aut1 revision peg boards - word and sentence match to pictures-over 100 boards

Little Wandle is amazing at helping the top children read fluently. I am finding though, even with the extra interventions daily, that some children just cannot keep up with the pace of the scheme. I made these boards to support children for phase 2. Each separate grapheme has six different boards. On one side of the board has one of six different words, that mostly match the words read in the planning (some were just impossible to find a matching picture) and then each of these sides has six identical pictures. These pictures match to one of the words the child will read. They can then use a peg to place it over this - using pegs helps with fine motor. A quick note that the vowels on these boards are the middle CVC phonemes, and that some phonemes in the CVC words have both initial sound boards and end sounds boards like t - ten or net. The second side of the board has a sentence, which uses the word on the previous side. This sentence will match to one of the three pictures under it. Again children can use a peg to indicate which is accurate - a little comprehension work with fine motor skills. I folded each print out in half and then laminated them so children can use them over and over again.
