Phase 2 and 3 phonics sound mats - Alphablocks in A3, A4 and A5 format

Sound mats are priceless when helping young children to remember the sounds they need to write in words. A quick reminder of how the sound is formed is usually all it takes for the child to carry on with their work instead of being stuck. I have included the A3 version, which I use as part of a display, the A4 version, which I don’t actually use but I have in the past for visually impaired children so they have a larger copy and the A5 version. Both the A4 and A5 versions I like to laminate back to back so they are both together for the children. Tricky words are also included on each. I also tend to place ‘me’ and ‘my’ together as this is something children do tend to get mixed up with.

Cbeebies Alphablocks CVC word family velcro words

Children love Alphablocks and they are an amazing program that really does help little ones understand phonics and helps them on their initial journey on how to read. This resource was made using word families because that will help hearing the different sounds and therefore help with initial reading of CVC words. It is also good for children to hear different intial sounds. It is important to include pictures with each word too so they can link words to real life objects. Once laminated, velcro needs adding to the dots so the Alphablocks can be stuck down. The children can then move these initial sounds infront of the picture of the middle and end sounds to make a word. They can then read it and match it to the pictures. Word families included are: at, ad, et, en, in, ig, ot, og, ug, un. Reading is a ‘silent’ process for many children. When first learning they do not possess the ability to imagine what the written word is telling us. They have many, many other skills they have to master before they can get there. This resource is aimed at beginner readers and to try and put some fun into reading. They read it and then they have to match it to the correct picture out of the three available. With a picture to help young children visualise what they are reading, they have a purpose to reading it too and not just going through the motions. I made a lot of resources for traditional tales that can be printed off and laminated. Then the idea was for the children in my class to access these independently, either by using pegs to match the answers or other ways to work out the answer like using bottle tops with letters wrote on them. These resources are available in my shop.

Farmer Duck - Phase 2 reading booklet - Duck's to do list.

It is important for young children to have reading material that they can use and read. This booklet is designed for young children to read independently. With this in mind I have not used Capital letters unless they look like the lower case version. The sentences used are very simple and repetitive, Starting with ‘Duck can …’ . To use the resource, I printed it all out, then laminated it before making it into a booklet.

The Three Little Pigs - CVC word intial sound bottle top match

I created all these resources to be used in my class when they start in reception. The idea behind this resource is to allow children to match initial sounds to words. When a child is ready to start phonics this is an important skill to allow them to move onto working with full words. You will need an extra resource to go along side this printable. I used bottle tops and wrote the letters on the top. Each card has a picture that they have to think of the initial sound for, they then have to find the bottle top with the sound (letter) that matches. They place it on top of the circle and then it makes the word. With help they can then read the sounds and blend the full word.

Little Wandle revision Ph2 Aut2 letter formation, sentence practice and picture box work sheets

Little Wandle produces some amazing readers. The fact that we are teaching children in Reception what they used to learn in Year 2 by itself shows how fast the pace is. However, this pace is unrelenting and some children really struggle, even if they are involved with interventions every single day, they still need extra support. I produced sheets that I place on my writing table that allow children to practice sentence writing and add a picture to match them. Then I thought that some children need a little more scaffolding so I produced these sheets to help those children practice a certain sound. I also added letter formation practice, knowing full well that four year olds do find this hard. So these sheets include the picture and sounds matching Little Wandle, a picture box for children to draw something (I normally ask them to make this match what they write), a line to practice letter formation and a few lines to write an independent sentence. They have worked really well in encourage children to write independently and of course revise the sounds they are not sure of. These worksheets are for Reception Autumn 2 phonemes.

This is a great resource that children enjoy. They have to problem solve to find the odd one out. I laminated the sheets, cut out the crosses and stuck velcro on the squares and cross. This enables the children to work independently by placing the cross on the ‘odd one out’ before explaining to me what they found. I also placed the number sentences with Numicon representations on the back of these sheets for a reference to the children. Why is this activity important? When children subitise it means they can work out how many in a collection without having to count everything they see. They can describe how many by looking and thinking which helps your child build their mathematical imaginations. Spatial structures are critical mathematical representations that children need to be able to make meaning from. It later enables children to work flexibly with numbers and operations.

Percy the Park Keeper - One Snowy Night - Phonics phase 2 milk bottle top CVC words

When learning to read and write, children need the opportunity to explore with letters and sounds. This resource has been made to allow children to move letters, manipulating them and hopefully reading them as they go a long in order to make simple CVC words. You will need something to write the letter sounds on, in my case I used milk bottle tops and this allows the children to move them around but with the picture they can relate the written word to what they can see. A must at the early stages of reading.

These peg boards have been made for children to access independently - they use a peg to indicate which word, out of three rhyming words available, matches the picture shown. The pegs have an added bonus of aiding their fine motor skills and its a great way to see if they are reading accurately. I have been made aware recently that Microsoft office does not support publisher any more. With this in mind, I have added a PDF version of the resource that you can use.

Percy the Park Keeper - One Snowy Night - Sentence starter boards

When initially learning to write sentences, a child must remember a lot so it is important for us to scaffold their learning. One way we can achieve this is to provide sentence starters. This not only enhances their sentence writing it also gives them somewhere to start in their thought processes and allows them to be creative with their writing. Starting off is sometimes the hardest part of the writing process! These boards are designed for writing just a sentence in my class as an independent activity but of course, they can be used for story writing etc given the correct input.
