A simple introduction to using number lines at KS1. Sheet 1 shows 3 number lines showing 0 to 10. Sheets 2 to 6 show 3 number lines with numbers omitted. Children name / write in the missing numbers. Laminate these sheets and they can be used over and again. Sheet 7 shows 9 addition questions with a number line for children to use to get the answers. Sheet 8 shows 9 subtraction questions with a number line. Sheet 10 is a template for you or the children to write their own sums.

Here is a fun activity using 6 coloured blocks which children cut out from the sheet provided. Each block has a different word/s - beside, in between, above, under, below, next to. Children are given the tasks of a. recreate the patterns in the 3 patterns given b. create patterns of their own ensuring that the words make sense e.g. under must be under at least one other brick. You could make this a competitive game where children work in pairs or groups and see how many different combinations they can come up with. Extend / differentiate using less blocks or using lego or other blocks for practical activities.

A fun way to teach grid referencing linking to Geography, Literacy and Maths. Here are two versions of the popular game Battleships - one easier, one harder. The aim of the game is for team or pupil 1 to hide battleships on their grid. Team or pupil 2 tries to locate them suggesting grid references. If they get a ‘hit’, they cover their grid referenced with a hit symbol- ‘Kapow’, ‘Boo’, etc or a colour counter. They can add a different colour counter to indicate a miss keeping track of the references they have already suggested. There are 2 colour boards Numbers to 4 and letters a - d. Numbers to 7 and letters a - g. There are blank grids included for you or pupils to make their own personalised games.
