This lesson has been created with KS3 secondary history students in mind and is the first lesson in my Holocaust unit of work. This lesson has been created on Microsoft Powerpoint and the accompanying student handout and worksheet has been created on Powerpoint also. . Teacher Notes & Answers have been added to the notes section underneath each relevant slide on the Powerpoint. This resource slowly introduces students to the topic of the Holocaust using skills of inference on a historical artefact and through controlled classroom discussion. Students work on a single historical artefact individually/in pairs/as a class - whichever you feel suits your class best and build a picture of a person - they then have this put into greater perspective for them. The utmost care has been taken to ensure this resource has been created with the utmost respect to the victims of the holocaust and to ensure that students have the opportunity to connect and empathise to the human beings to whom the attrocities of the holocaust were committed. There a no images or corpses in this resource - however the murder of victims is discussed. This lesson is the first in my SOW following William of Normandy’s ascension to the English throne in 1066. The lesson focuses heavily on Williams problems now that he is a foreign ruler in England in 1066 having conquered its people by force. It looks at the problems William may face and gets students to consider their solutions. Students then demonstrate their learning by practicing a 4 mark describe question (New AQA exam technique) Peer assessment can easily be incorporated for efficient marking. The lesson explores the reasons for the Normans Harrying of the North and details the impact this had on helping William keep control of England in 1066. The lesson has a variety of tasks that will take you beyond an hour and a suggested homework with a focus on bias and demonstrating knowledge acquired in the lesson is also provided. A well presented lesson on the 1066 The Battle of Stamford Bridge in the run up to the penultimate lesson of the Battle of Hastings created for KS3 history students on Microsoft Powerpoint A little about the lesson Students explore the Battle of Stamford bridge between two of the contenders Harold Godwinson and Harald Hardrada. Students are provided with the pieces of the events that occurred at the Battle of Stamford Bridge which they must piece together themselves. There are 2 optional tasks provided in this resource to accommodate with teachers printing budget allowances in schools! Students can either cut the cards with the images provided or they can arrange the statements and put them into a storyboard of their own, adding their own images for a potential homework task. Students are then encouraged to draw conclusions from the Battle of Stamford bridge and communicate these in writing through PEE paragraph exercises (which could be extended through a suggested homework piece included in the resource) Whats included? This lesson details the progression from Motte and Bailey Castles to Stone Keep Castles in Medieval Britain. The lesson contains a 4 mark describe question to reflect on prior learning. The content covers the structure and features of stone keep castle and then looks further (through means of a carousel activity) advantages and disadvantages of stone keep castles. This would lead well to insert a Paper 1 ‘Interpretations Q’ for the new Spec AQA paper.

Included within this resource is 2x consecutive lessons looking at recruitment and propaganda aimed at KS3 students studying World War one. This lesson introduces students to the idea of the stock market and how it works -initially through a brief video and followed by a game students can play independently/in pairs or in groups/ were students can experience the stock market. Exam technique covered in this lesson is the 4 mark question. Although this lesson is designed for the new spec it could easily work with the old spec too. Speculation on the stock market is a really difficult concept for students to understand. It’s aim is to explore the ways in which the Nazi’s used propaganda and stereotyping to humiliate and discredit the Jewish race in German society. This is to help students begin to understand how the Nazis then were able to turn society against the Jewish people and other minority groups which then paved the way towards Holocaust and eventual mass murder. This lesson is very heavily focused on working on students source analysis and interpretation skills using antisemitic propaganda that was distributed by the Nazi party in German society in the 1930’s. This lesson includes suggested learning objectives and outcomes and has been designed to be taught over the course of one hour - although it may run over. This lesson has been created for KS3 history students and is the first lesson in a series on the Titanic. Students will specifically look at why the Titanic is so famous and investigate, using data, whether women and children really were prioritised to be saved first. The lesson looks firstly at prior knowledge then a literacy comprehension tasks to pull out out facts about the Titanic and gain a broad understanding about why the Titanic is so infamous. Students then look at data showing the different social classes aboard the Titanic and the mortality rates of the passengers. Students use cross-curricular skills and produce a graph showing this data and then using closed questioning for direction students explain the patterns they notice between mortality rates and class of passenger/sex and age of passengers. Squared or graph paper is ideally required to complete this task easily and neatly. The lesson offers an opportunity for independent work and a paired activity in the format of a plenary game. when exploring the different inventions and the inventors developed during the 18th Century. A homework opportunity is provided and accompanying homework slips are included in the supporting resources. All accompanying resources are included in Microsoft Powerpoint format and suggested learning outcomes provided with space for you to add your own accompanying grades.
