AFL- Differentiated marking reflection and target setting- GREEN PEN ACTIVITY- 10-20mins

Usually at the end of term once I have marked an extended piece of work/assessment, I use this to help students reflect on their work and work out which area they need to focus on to improve next term. The students will need lots of assistance and sampling the first time you show them this but once they’ve got it, they enjoy picking out specific targets from the list and then on the first lesson back, I get them to write their target at the stop of the page and keep checking their work against it. Also easy to peer assess future work as students can focus on their peer’s specific target and give richer feedback. Please review if you download! Thanks :)

Student and parent friendly bespoke feedback cards- TEMPLATE

I created these slips to encourage a very tricky mixed ability group to reflect upon their classroom behaviour and work. I printed on coloured card and handed them out at the end of term. I then sent a text out to all parents telling them to ask for the slip and to email me if they didn’t receive one. The students appreciated the bespoke feedback and were interested to read each other’s and I could use them to refer back to in future lessons to help them reflect upon their learning.

OIL DISASTER- BP Gulf of Mexico- BLANK homework/video lesson worksheet. GCSE Case study

I used this as a two part video lesson that lead to an exam contrasting the impacts. This video really aided engagement with the wider oil and geopolitical issues of the energy module. The students really enjoyed the documentary as it is very engaging and I regularly targeted questions and checked worked and then allowed them to have the sheet with them during the next lesson’s exam q. Print the worksheet onto coloured paper. Thanks.

Mining- West Virginia GCSE ENERGY CASE STUDY- AFL and fully scaffolded 6 marker exam Q included!

Title- How does energy consumption affect the landscape? I had already completed the BP oil spill and traditional coal extraction when we completed this lesson. It begins with a GP activity to improve a previous exam Q and builds the Virginia case study through a short clip that I show twice and ends with a contrasting 6 marker. AFL and discussion opportunities throughout. Differentiated and SEN friendly. Thanks, please review if you download :)

KS3 lesson for introducing Nike and the secondary industry. Video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5uYCWVfuPQ also found in doc. All students love this doc! It’s great and only 20mins long. Could be 1-2 lessons, with the recreation of the given poster task at the end. I use it to lead into understanding ‘ethical shopping’ and the interactions between consumers and TNCs.

China's Terracotta Army worksheet- Independent learning- TWO DIFFERENTIATED WORKSHEETS

For this lesson I wanted to use student’s work for display so we completed this task on paper and over the whole lesson so students could produce work they were proud of and everyone had an opportunity to contribute to the year 7 display. We watched an introductory youtube video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4c_ADqshdSA&index=7&list=PLRc_0Mp9wmwgKyaMFYbCusDhzVRpDr_9f&t=0s And I mind mapped their thoughts and descriptions on the white board and then modelled the task using samples from previous classes. I print the worksheet in A3 and colour as the text is small and hare 1 between 2. The LA sheets are to be written on and everyone should complete the superstar extension, which I use as an exit plenary.

OUTSTANDING TRF Debate lesson- 'Should we contact the last remaining tribes on Earth?'

This lesson is always enjoyable as the students are fascinated by the content and are always up for debating each other! Depending on the group, this usually involves 1 prep lesson, with lots of videos (links in the ppt) and discussion and then the debate lesson 2- which I usually finish the biosphere/TRF topic with. Works really well if you choose the mediators/judges based on their personalties and abilities and ask senior staff to join you for it and be a part of one of the teams/judges. This lesson works for various ages as the question is very open to their own views and your role is to facilitate their ideas. Enjoy & please review if you download :)

Intro to COASTS- Ideal for assessing independent learning ability. Diverse and lengthy tasks!

I created this for my students as a more engaging alternative to textbook activities. It introduces the coast, key vocab, types of waves, true/false quiz, and discusses pebble vs sans beaches using beaches in the UK. The tasks are extremely diverse and tackle a range of geography skills. Every task is differentiated with a challenge task and examples. Should be printed on A3 in colour and given 1 per pair. Will take at least one full hour, if not two! The second worksheet is matched to the video which is about the South Australian coastline and contains a series of questions matched to the video and the tasks slowly get more difficult, ending with a persuasive exercise about species management. -FULL LESSON Please review if you download!

What is the TRF?- Independent worksheet. Ideal for assessing independent learning ability.

I created this resource for my students to use whilst I was away. It introduces them to the TRF and contains 6 different tasks that are wide ranging and matched to different skills & abilities. This took my students two lessons to complete but could be used with high ability groups for one lesson/ can be used very flexibly. Ensure you print in colour and give 1 per pair. Extras needed: Blank world map Climate Graph for Brunei

TRF Doc and MATCHING DIVERSE ACTIVITIES! Years 7 & 8- Deforestation Issues

I created this for cover work over two lessons. First the students were asked to mindmap in their books what they already knew about the Amazon and share their ideas. Then video was on (ALWAYS PUT THE SUBS ON) and the teacher wrote any specialist vocab on the white board and then paused regularly to check understanding and bounce ideas around the room. The tasks get more difficult as they go on and if I was running the session, tasks 1 & 2 would be done in the lesson and the third could be set for homework as it is well explained and parent friendly. Really good doc for when you just need a break! Enjoy!
OUTSTANDING lesson on sustainability and conservation of the biosphere.

OUTSTANDING lesson on sustainability and conservation of the biosphere.

This lesson was created for a Year 10 group to recapture their love of the planet to enable them to think about Geography in a less separate way and encouraged them to generate solutions whilst teaching them about sustainability and conservation. It is a lesson where the students are in control and much of the discussion is for you to facilitate and them to discover amongst themselves. I found it really energised the group to learning in depth about different ecosystems and encouraged them to think about their own role in society locally and their global impact. I often use this lesson at the end of term for other year groups to remind them what geographers do in the real world and how they think about the planet. Please review if you download, thanks :)

Middle Eastern Geography Research 1-2 Lessons- Inclusive & SEN Friendly

This was created for a yr9 group, but could be easily adapted for different key stages and regions of the world. Great for assessing their research skills, understanding of place and how each place is shaped by the physical geography and historical events. Document includes clear success criteria, sample timeline & supporting images/links. Includes a peer assessment, if you choose for students to present/share their work. Students have really enjoyed the freedom of this activity and using gapminder. The task could cover 3 lessons, with the final lesson being the presentations and peer assessment.

This resource could be used as part of an Environmental Issues SoW. The aims are to reduce the amount of plastic used in your school through the class creating persuasive adverts encouraging their peers to buy reusable bottles. Each lesson uses a variety of learning techniques based on enquiry and all video links are in the notes section of each slide. I will then display the students work around the school and see if it has any impact! Water consumption is incredibly important for concentration and should be encouraged within the school environment. These lessons could also be used to create cross curricular links in DT and Art and potentially provide the design for school merchandise! Please review if you download! Enjoy :)

How do we View Migrants? - Intro to Migration/Critical Thinking Skills

(0)
A lesson I used as an introductory lesson about migration and the different types of migrant and as a way of highlighting biases present in the media and our individual world view. Best used with new groups of students of any year 7-11 as most of the tasks are reflective and discussion based and involve random pairings and a main carousel activity. Very engaging and easy to manage lesson. Could definitely be used in a Tutor time/Citzenship lesson also and possibly for English to alert students to journalistic bias and to help them read texts more critically.

'Who's chopping down the TRF and why?' - Rainforest GCSE causes of deforestation

(1)
Originally made for Edexcel B GCSE Geog- Batte for the Biosphere topic but can be applied to any syllabus teaching about the causes of deforestation. The students really enjoyed the lesson as it is very balanced between discussion and exam prep- suits a mixed ability group well and there's lots of room for creative higher level thinking. The lesson gets students to first of all think about the connection between a beef burger and the rainforest and then gets the students to discuss the various causes of deforestation through peer teaching of 3 different articles. There is a describe/explain answer builder sheet which worked well with low ability students and the articles can be differentiated when they are initially given out. There is also an exam question and sample answer for the students to then use to create their own. There's discussion of indigenous tribes living sustainably in the TRF through a brillian TED talk and ends with a quick MEAT the facts video which gets students to understand the links between deforestation and our meat appetite in economically developed nations.

GCSE Geography SKILLS Activity- PEE Practise

Used with a GCSE class for them to understand how to structure their sentences and recognise which ones are Points/Evidence/Explanation. They found this quite tricky, especially linking up the sentences and finding the various SPaG errors but their written work has improved hugely since taking the time to go through these skills. Could be used for homework or in class as a main activity.
