The Discovery of Tutankhamun's Tomb

(15)
This is a play and powerpoint designed to work together. The play can be read by able readers and used to describe the events leading up to the discovery of the tomb by Howard Carter. The lesson started in the classroom but at the point when the tomb was opened (slide 16) I moved the class to a small learning mentor room which I had decorated with rich materials and artefacts and had them crawl into the room through a pop-up tunnel. We finished the play and the slides in there as the room got hotter and hotter - a memorable session.

Magical Measuring

A range of practical measuring activities with a magical theme. Used this with a mixed ability Yr4 class and have never seen them more engaged or excited by maths learning - especially the potion making. It had to match the colour of mine (used 4 different food colours) and was a 'de-gnoming' potion. Groups of 4 all chose a magical team name - fab!

All examples of athletes are taken from real Olympians - some of the results in have been altered slightly to make the investigation more useful and varied. Tudor linked maths to work on data handling. Pupils have to plan the supplies for a long sea voyage based on three different ranks of sailor, all of whom are entitled to different rations. Enables data handling on a range of scales with ever increasing quantities. Best to start with one type of sailor and build up to all three and then all men at each rank. Done gradually it makes for an exciting project using lots of data handling skills.

These cards are multi-functional - they can be used for sorting, classifying and for display! I have used this one resource for at least three good science lessons - and I think they have more scope too!

Using the step by step power-point learn what contours mean and then cut out each layer of a hill before constructing it. Included in the pack is a document with two different 'mountains' but it would be more 'real' for your pupils to create hills local to them.

Using a range of 'lost property' items, contained in bags and suitcases, children learn to piece together clues to gain an understanding of the kind of person they belonged to. An excellent starting lesson for any history topic. The presentation introduces the idea of looking for clues, looking at two different rooms to think about what kind of person lives there. In with the detailed lesson plan there is a sheet with differentiation for lower ability pupils, a rationale and learning objectives which are linked to the new NC. Has been used very successfully to introduce Romans but would work equally well with other topics This lesson was graded outstanding when I taught it! Good luck!
