The attached flipcharts have been made to help support the teaching of vowel phonemes. The phonemes match the NLS objectives for Year 2. The flipcharts may be opened in Active Primary or Active Studio 2. Flip- charts can be printed for written reinforcement. Term 1 includes: ee, oo, ar, oy, ow. Term 2 includes: air, or, er. Term 3 includes: ea, ear.

This resource will teach pupils how to read and say the different pronunciations of the letter string 'ough'. Most of the time we teach pupils to pronounce words using rules and then tell them about exceptions. In this case most of the pronunciations of 'ough' are exceptions or isolates. There are five whole class activities for the whiteboard. National curriculum links: 1.3, 2.3, 3.2 Teachers can assess pupils by listening to them read a section of the story in activity 1.

The emphasis of this resource is on working orally, so that pupils can see themselves as owners and understand what the apostrophe, in this context, is communicating. The final activity recaps on the use of the apostrophe to signal a missing letter and provides an entertaining game encouraging pupils to make a distinction between the apostrophes of possession and contraction. Throughout the lesson, the emphasis is on collaborative learning, with pupils comparing their answers and justifying their conclusions.

A resource with a series of powerpoint presentation lessons and website guide. It encourages pupils to assess and create stimulating descriptive writing pieces. The units focusing on ‘buttons’ also provides useful stimuli to create stories. These units can be used to produce coursework and exam practice and are very useful in terms of AFL practice.
