These highly engaging and purposeful lessons are the first two lessons in a series of six building towards an extended creative writing piece based on the ‘Seven Natural Wonders of the World.’ In these lessons, children learn: -What nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are, and how to use these ‘base words’ for clarity and effect in their writing; -About each of the Seven Wonders of the world, through viewing pictures and reading key facts; -How to use base words and their five senses to begin to describe the natural wonders, moving from word level to sentence level over the two lessons; Included is the clear, comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation for both lessons (24 slides) and the worksheets/templates needed for the 3 main activities (provided in both Word and PDF). In the past, I have used these lessons with children in lower KS2 (years 3 and 4) - the key learning is aligned with curriculum expectations for writing. All images are licensed for commercial use.

Within this varied, interesting, and engaging lesson, students aim to build their knowledge of two of history’s most famous explorers: Christopher Columbus and Ibn Battuta. Students utilise their independent learning skills to research the two travelers, utilise map-reading and geographical skills to improve their knowledge of their journeys, and draw comparisons and contrasts between the two. The lesson follows a clear and logical learning journey, which requires students to: - Consider the skills and characteristics required to be a learner, and apply them to real life contexts; - Share what they already know about the two explorers, and use their curiosity to devise new questions about them; - Employ their independent learning skills to find out the key events and journeys in the lives of the two explorers; - Plot the locations of their expeditions on a world map, and consider questions about their journeys based upon what they see; - Compare and contrast the key features of each explorer, using connectives and key facts; - Peer assess each others' learning using the simple but appropriate success criteria. This interesting and highly-stimulating lesson enables students to describe and understand the key aspects of physical geography (e.g. climates, vegetation belts, flora, fauna, mountains, and rivers) and human geography (e.g. types of settlement, populations, use of resources, and trade) in the vast and varied continent of Asia. Whilst gaining a wide range of knowledge about the content, students also become familiar with a wide range of vocabulary pertinent to the geography curriculum. The lesson follows a clear, logical, bite-size learning journey, which guides students towards relevant and constructive learning objectives. Over the course of this journey, they become able to: - Identify Asia on a map, and identify the countries and regions within Asia; - Understand key information about the physical and human geography of the continent, through a fun, interactive quiz; - Retrieve, share, and describe their understanding of the physical and human geography of specific locations in Asia (Dubai, Yala National Park, Gobi Desert, and Tokyo) through a jigsaw model task; - Complete a case study of the physical and human geography of their own place in Asia, and describe their findings to others; -Peer assess each other’s descriptions using the learning objectives.
