The focus of the unit is around issues of homelessness, so accompanying the unit is a class reading of Robert Swindell's novel ‘Stone Cold’. The assessment, however, isn’t on ‘Stone Cold’, but is on a creative writing piece, that uses description (so not narration) to describe a homeless person in Cambridge (but this can be changed to any city or town, really). The novel is merely being read to them so that they can use it to help them feel empathy etc. I have shown my groups clips from the film ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ as well, to help get their minds working about issues of homelessness.

I've adapted a Literature Circle task to aid in the study of Never Let Me Go, which I plan to use next year with my top set year 11 group. I've also included the lessons I plan to use to go through the chapters of the novel - reading is done outside of lesson, so you may find that you go through each 'lesson' PPT at a faster rate than one per lesson, so don't be scared off by amount of 'lessons'!

The first 8 lessons for a unit on Private Peaceful. I found the SOW online,adapted it slightly, and created PPTs to accompany the scheme, so I cannot take full credit for each individual lesson. It worked quite well with my top set year 8 group, and they really enjoyed our study of the novel. Final assessment for my group was a Speaking and Listening task, but it could easily be adapted to include a writing assessment, or you could create your own.

A collection of resources that I've used to help teach an introduction to the history of the English language - focus is on The Canterbury Tales. I didn’t create the idea, but I’ve revised it a bit and created a PowerPoint presentation that you can use with the handouts that I’ve borrowed from another user. This worksheet provide all the information needed to run a Macbeth Murder Mystery and use drama activity to teach a range of dramatic techniques including use of flashback. I’ve used this with my year 8 group, but it can likely be applied to most KS3 groups.

The following is a basic introduction to film media for year 7s. It requires the use of the DVDs of Stormbreaker and the 2005 version of Beowulf (the age appropriate one). It also makes use of Oxford University Press 'Beowulf' text (Keeping and Crossely-Holland). Students start by looking at how heroes and villians are typically represented in film and television, then study conventions of DVD covers, and finally focus on review writing.

Part 2: The last 7 lessons for a unit on Private Peaceful. Scheme of Work with Powerpoint Presentations for each lesson. Final assessment was a Speaking and Listening task, but it could easily be adapted to include a writing assessment. There is one electronic resource missing here, as I did not scan the second text. You'll need a copy of &'All Quiet on the Western Front&'; - I took a section of the text, in which the narrator describes a gas attack.

This was an activity that went over really well with my year 9 students. We read Poe’s poem ‘The Raven’, watched the Simpsons version, and then the students were asked to create their own dramatic performance of the poem, which we recorded and screened. Took two lessons.

The following resources I've adapted or created to create a scheme of work intended to introduce year 8 students to the codes and conventions used in print media, focusing on magazines and newspapers. For lesson 8, I did not save a digitical copy of the two articles used. The first resources for a Scheme of Work introducing KS3 students to the life, context and works of William Shakespeare. Resources include worksheets and powerpoint presentations. The following are PPTs and worksheets I've created or found to use as part of a unit of study using a Post-1914 play. The play I&'ve used (with great success for two years now) is David Calcutt&';s adaptation of Dracula. The assessed piece of work at my school requires pupils to write their own gothic story, but I've also included another simple task that I found online awhile back (creating a Vampire Hunter guidebook), that may be more suitable for lower ability groups. Feel free to adapt and edit the work here; it&'s a good start, but it is by no means perfect :) Happy teaching!

8 introductory lessons to the skills required for the Eduqas English Language Component 2A (Reading) exam (19th and 21st century non-fiction texts). These lessons are mostly based on the Eduqas English Language Book 1 text, and are meant to compliment activities and information within the text.

A few lessons that I've put together as an end of year study of poetry - poems are quite random, but are ones that I enjoy personally and feel are accessable to KS3 students.

A resource with lesson presentations and activities for My Year 8 unit on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Students work towards an essay assessment, which requires them to analyse how Scrooge changes after each visit by the ghosts. I&'ve updated these lessons recently (Nov 2010) to be a little clearer and easier to follow. The assessment task sheet is also better (in my opinion). Enjoy :) Also, I&';ve saved them as PPTs in the 97-2003 format, so that those not working on Vista/7 can access (I hope!)
