I have been designing resources for many years as I worked with preschool and primary age youngsters with delayed or impaired speech and language skills. The resources using symbols are free. My latest resources which I have illustrated are extra tasks based on Marion Blank's Language Levels (previous ones have been free). They can be used with groups of mixed language ability and are reasonably priced.

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Print the NOTES as a sheet for reference. There are several suggestions, including how to use the resource with a mixed ability group with readers and non-readers. Print the MAKE QUESTIONS AND STATEMENTS on card. The little cards will be more manageable if you use full size A4, but they are legible if you print 2-up. Basically it is an activity requiring rearrangement of word cards to make questions or statements but there are other ideas in the guide too.

Ten large pictures of well-known items (e.g. house, bike, car) each with six parts to name on smaller pictures. Target specific vocabulary for components or related items. Ten suggestions for language activities for 1-1 or small group work. No text on children's pictures. Games pages better if printed A4 single-sided on card.

Resource to draw attention to a variety of verbs which can stand for ‘said’. Practise picking out the actual words spoken to write in a speech bubble. Mark up speech marks and missing punctuation correctly on the sentences by pictures. Illustrated with ClipArt. Mind-map created with Widgit’s Communicate Ideas about different types of sentences, the punctuation mark each ends with, and how we mark direct speech.

5 pages of cartoons with a selection of verb possibilities to use instead of ‘said’. A writing column requires an event and some actual speech in a bubble.
