Jesse's Island number problem

Jesse's Island number problem

(3)
A number problem for year 1 children to solve involving triangular numbers. We had been looking at different methods the children could use to solve number problems, e.g. drawing diagrams, using apparatus, making playdough models, etc.. They worked in pairs or small groups to encourage them to talk about their approach. The problem is easily differentiated by changing the final number. More able children and those in higher year groups could look at the pattern and think about rules for solving the problem regardless of the number given.

Feet! Problem solving activity

(2)
A pictorial problem solving activity for year 1 children. Which combinations of animals will give you the number of feet required? How many different ways are there of making a given number? Picture cards provide visual support for the activity.
Letter sounds orienteering

Letter sounds orienteering

(1)
Outdoors phonics activity, useful for Phase 4 revision of sounds. Print off the sound cards and hide around the playground. Children find the sound and the number then return to the supervising adult(s) who uses the checklist to ensure children have the sound correct and to record which sounds they have found.
Olympic Stadium Legacy

Olympic Stadium Legacy

(0)
Looking at the legacy of the Montreal Olympic Stadium, nicknamed 'The Big Mistake&' because of the amount of money poured into it. Also asks the children to think about the impact on the environment and society. Includes an activity at the end of creating a legacy for the London 2012 stadium and how to use it creatively and sustainably. My kids got so involved in this, it really surprised me how motivated and inventive they were - they even carried on in their own spare time!

One step money word problems - more and less

(3)
These are one step more and less problems that I've been using in Year 1. We're practising the vocabulary of 'more' and 'less' and their association with add and subtract. I'm also doubling up on a bit of "know and recognise the value of different coins." The last three slides require secure understanding and reasoning skills and so are good for extension or mastery/more able work. They ask questions such as: "Stu has 8p. Every week he spends 2p on sweets. How many weeks will his money last for?" Or: 'Amandeep has 2p. Meera has 5p more in her purse. Which coins does Meera have in her purse? Can you draw all the different combinations of coins that Meera might have? I hope you find it useful!

KS2 Maths revision slides - easy points

I put together these revision slides for my less able Year 4s. When it came to maths papers, they persistently forgot 'easy' maths that they could do in class, so we revised them to death with these slides for some easy points on the papers!

Digital worksheet - Halloween phonics freebie!

(1)
A perfect way to bring an engaging technology activity into your classroom and a fun Halloween freebie! This resource contains a PowerPoint with Halloween-themed images for your children to segment for spelling. Simply download onto a computer, Chrome book or tablet that can display PowerPoints or upload to Google slides for devices connected to the internet, e.g. iPads. Start the slideshow and children write the words on whiteboards or into books. There is a slide at the end where they can check their own work. I know that all sounds a bit complicated but my Year 1 SEN kids use these with independence! This activity is great for Year R work stations, independent cutaways, intervention work, peer tutoring, assessment, morning work or an early finisher task. Assessment Tracking spreadsheet

Assessment Tracking spreadsheet

(1)
I use this spreadsheet for my tracking. It includes groups that my school is focussing on and allows you to filter by these groups e.g., Free School Meals, EAL, summer/spring/autumn birthdays, etc.. It will be easy to change the column headings to include groups that your school is focussing on. There is a tab for each of maths, reading, literacy and science.
Presentations for teaching split digraphs

Presentations for teaching split digraphs

(5)
Four powerpoints covering the split digraphs o_e, i_e, e_e and u_e. First slide - revise Next - teach using 2 examples Finally - practise using 2 examples Up to you to decide on the apply stage! Sorry there are no a_e slides, the children have not encountered ae as a grapheme so it doesn't apply to this strategy for teaching split digraphs!

Phonics flyer for parents - autumn term

Number stories - addition and subtraction

Number stories - addition and subtraction

(12)
Use number stories to help children visualise or act out a word problem or calculation. These number stories are based around addition and subtraction. Children are first shown a number story and relates it to a calculation as a model. The process is then turned around and scaffolded as the children are given a calculation and supported in making a number story from the calculation given. A set of differentiated number sentences is provided which the children can then use with practical equipment, drawings or writing to tell their own number stories.
Tidying up song
Katharine7Katharine7

Tidying up song

(5)
The children in my year 1 class were hopeless at tidying up at the end of a lesson. I wrote this song to remind then of the tidying up roles and to focus them on the task. It has worked a treat! (PS Sing to the tune of 'Pop Goes the Weasel&')

Home learning writing ideas bank

These pick and mix ideas for writing give meaningful contexts for children’s writing whilst learning at home. The ideas are open-ended enough that they will be suitable for most primary year groups.
Light sources colouring sheet
Katharine7Katharine7

Light sources colouring sheet

(6)
I set this up as an independent colouring activity for the children which can be used for assessment. Children colour in and circle the light sources and then colour in 1-4 lightbulbs depending on how bright the light source is.

Maths mastery for Early Years - planning for number bonds to 5

(1)
One week’s worth of maths mastery planning for Early Years based on number bonds to 5. The planning includes variation, overlearning for those who need it and opportunities to go deeper for more able children. My TA and I are enjoying teaching maths using this format and the class are enjoying the Numbertime activities. I hope your children enjoy them too! This free resource includes a week’s worth of maths planning and a hidden number PowerPoint game. All of the printed resources that go with this planning are available as a download for just £3 which you can access here. If you’re looking for more EYFS maths mastery planning try: Pattern - Maths Mastery for Early Years (Unit 1) I’d be grateful for any feedback on the maths mastery planning as I’m always keen to improve what I do.
