This is from a T&L Breakfast that I did on some approaches to stretch and challenge. It aims to give some ideas that work on challenging all students not just the most able. If you try any of the ideas would be good to get some feedback on them. What works in some classes doesn’t necessarily work in others.

I use this for either a revision/consolidation/homework task. I change the headings and subheadings depending on the topic we are studing. Students then have to recap what they have learn trying to be concise. They also include an image which either best sums up the topic or they draw one. Then in the grey boxes they sum up the topic in key details. This works for lots of subjects and I have done it for history, sociology and RE. It also works well for book reviews.

A template to play revision connect four. Split class into 2 teams. Take it in turns asking each team a question if they get it correct they choose to where they want to place a token. Click on the circle once to change to red and again to turn yellow. Usual rules then apply.

A lesson that aims to teach the skill of chronology to students. PowerPoint has challenge tasks that aim to push higher ability students. The timeline group task engages students and can be a competition between different groups

A lesson that looks at the Bus boycott and its impact on the civil rights movement. Include a GCSE styled question, with key words, sentence starters and challenge tasks.

This idea sprang up from teaching a particular difficult Year 9 class (maybe pushing it in terms of age, but they loved it). Every student is given a card at the beginning of the lesson and explained that if they work hard and show good behavior their card will be ticked off. Each row completed equals a different reward. At first I rewarded everything and we went through lots of cards. Answering questions, not talking when others are speaking, completing work etc. This worked very well with this class as students start to see and hear that others are getting rewarded. By the end other teachers of the class stole this idea. I printed 4 to an A4 page and It can be stuck in the back of their books i printed it on card and its was their responsibility to bring it. If they loose it they start again.

This lesson focuses upon source skills and GCSE styled questions. This lesson builds upon the previous lesson that looked at life in trenches. Students work through questions with sentence starters, key words and model answers. You can build in peer and self assessment with the model answers. Question include: - How are they different? - Why are they different? - Which is most convincing? The worksheet allows you to work through source looking at Nature, Origin, Author, Audience and Purpose.

A lesson that looks at the Ku Klux Klan , and their rise and fall during the 1920s . This lesson forms part of a SOW for AQA America 1920- 1973 Opportunity and Inequality. The lesson includes a GCSE question, with sentence starters for those who need them, as well as challenge tasks to stretch and challenge the top end.

This can be used for a homework task or part of a lesson where students have to write a BBC news article about a particular topic/theme that has been studed. I get students to then pritoise information to include titled for other top stories and make links in the relevant articles section. Change the title to whatever links to what you are learning or leave it blank and get students to add their own.

This was created to recap an entire topic. Each space is a particular topic, there is one question to buy to the topic and subsequent questions other people who land on it. If they fail to answer it the cost is double. Let the student choose the costs of the topic properties, the harder topics can be made more expensive. Laminate the board and resources. Let the student choose the The resource includes an editable board, editable property cards, editable chance cards and money tokens.

A tutor time activity to look at the upcoming election, at first it introduces the idea of how the general election works. Then a chance to look at the main parties, the key people and their ideas. The idea is to look at two every day then on the last day to hold our own mini election.

A snapchat themed resource where students sum up the lesson into a snapchat image. Get students to consolidate their learning into one key point.

A revision game for History of Public Health GCSE topic, students use this to recap topic and break up a lesson.

A task for a homework or recap of the topic of religious change, students use the info to look at how much religion changed under different monarchs. Either use the graph or on a piece of blank paper use the info sheets to plot how much religious changed.

A quick revision lesson activity. Print on A3 laminate. Students can then write their own questions on the sheet and then have a go at answering them. Questions get harder based around Bloom’s Taxonomy.

This lesson looks at the 1930’s and Popular Culture during this period. Students look at changes to cinema, literature, and other forms of entertainment. This lesson is teacher led but is open to question students, with questions built in to prompt discussion. There are challenge tasks to stretch and challenge the top end. An introductory lesson into the history of medicine starting with the prehistoric period. This lesson gets students to gain a chronology of the topic, putting together a time line using facts, dates and time periods. Students then look at the Prehistoric period and use sources to work out what medicine and health was like at the time period, source include Otzi, trepanned skull etc. Lesson has a GCSE styled question

Created for a revision task where students roll dice to decide upon an emoji and must then link it in someway to something we have learnt about the topic e.g Ship = Spanish Armada or baby = succession crisis . It worked well with by lower ability students having something to visualize we then began explaining and describing in more detail. Students take it in turns rolling the dice if they land on the same one as someone else they need to think of a different connection. I have also used this in lesson in conjunction with some of my other revision board games
