This Powerpoint resource guides children through writing a letter to their future self to be opened up at the end of the school year. Suitable for Key Stage 2 children, the lesson could take between half an hour to an hour, depending on how much discussion and modelling time is had. An optional letter template is included, as well as one that provides more support for children with additional needs.

This lesson looks at insect life cycles as part of the National Curriculum topic ‘Living Things and their Habitats’ for Year 5, before moving on to comparing different animal life cycles. It was originally taught as lesson 5 in the sequence, following learning about bird, mammal and amphibian life cycles (see my other resources for these lessons) After recapping learning from the previous few lessons, children learn about insects and their life cycles then spot some mistakes in a passage explaining the insect life cycle. This could be done orally or as an exercise in books/on mini whiteboards. Children then think about what they have learned during the whole topic so far and choose 2-3 different types of animals to compare using Venn diagrams.

This lesson looks at the parts of a flower and plant reproduction as part of the National Curriculum topic ‘Living Things and their Habitats’ for Year 5. It was originally taught as lesson 6 in a sequence, following learning about animal life cycles, but could be taught as a standalone lesson. The lesson begins with a recap/assessment activity on animal life cycles (resource included - it is a repeat of a pre-assessment activity used at the start of the unit. This lesson can also be found in my shop). This activity can be skipped if not yet taught or is not needed. Children then recap the parts of a whole plant and their functions (roots, stem, leaves, flowers), before learning about the parts of the flower and their roles in the reproductive process. They are then tasked with dissecting a flower of their own. NOTE - Lilies are often used for this activity but these can be very expensive. Many supermarkets sell bunches of alstromerias which are much cheaper and do the job just as well!

It was originally taught as lesson7 in a sequence, following a lesson in which children dissected a flower to observe its parts first hand (this lesson also available in my shop). It could possibly be taught without children having already done any learning about the parts of a flower but the large amount of new vocabulary to get to grips with would be challenging. The lesson begins with a recap of the parts of a flower learned about in the previous lesson, as well as their roles in the reproductive process. Children then carry out a role-play activity to help them practise using this new vocabulary in a fun way. Children then complete a part-whole graphic organiser which requires them to really understand the role of each part of the flower. There is a more challenging version of this worksheet included. The lesson finishes with a discussion activity that works well as an assessment for learning opportunity.

This low-resource science lesson focuses on the Year 5 National Curriculum Science objective on water resistance and gives children practice planning their own investigations. The practical lesson only requires resources that will already be in your classroom or are very easily sourced - plasticine/blue tack, clear plastic cups. The resources include a structured investigation planner sheet for children who need more support with planning their own investigations. This lesson looks at bird life cycles as part of the National Curriculum topic ‘Living Things and their Habitats’ for Year 5. It was originally taught as lesson 3 in the sequence, but it could come anywhere within the topic. Children first reflect on the characteristics of birds then look at some examples of a bird life cycle. Their challenge is then to create a clear and informative infographic showing the life cycle of a bird of their choice. There is an optional template included for children to use to create their infographic. You could choose to have children create their posters by hand, or they could use an app such as PicCollage to dreate their infographics.

This lesson is intended to be the first in a series covering the Living Things and their Habitats objectives for Year 5. The lesson includes a pre-assessment and then looks at the different types of animals. Children carry out a sorting activity then use what they have learned about animal types to justify their choices.

This lesson looks at mammal life cycles as part of the National Curriculum topic ‘Living Things and their Habitats’ for Year 5. It has strong links with both maths and literacy. It was originally taught as lesson 2 in the sequence, but it could come anywhere within the topic. Children carry out some research into animal gestation periods using the provided sources, then plot their findings on a scatter graph to determine whether there is a link between animal size and gestation period.

This lesson looks at amphibian life cycles as part of the National Curriculum topic ‘Living Things and their Habitats’ for Year 5. It was originally taught as lesson 4 in the sequence, but it could come anywhere within the topic. After recapping the previous week’s learning, children learn about amphibians and their life cycles then create a comic strip to show what they have learned. A comic strip template is included, as well as an additional one with extra support for children with SEND.
