I have used this resource with my year 2 group of Expected/Working At and Greater Depth/Working Above readers and the children have really enjoyed the tasks. The children call this their ‘selfie questions’ as they answer them independently after reading in pairs. Each session is based on 8 pages from the book. The questions cover a range of different types including retrieval, inference, prediction and clarification and each ‘selfie’ sheet has two extension tasks. This is a resource which could also be used with Year 3 readers as well.

Rights Respecting Schools Article of the Week resource

In my last two schools we would focus on a Unicef article of the week and refer to it in our teaching as part of being rights respecting schools. I have created a template of the 42 different rights which pertain to children and this can be printed and added to a noticeboard or display for easy referral. They can also be used in your planning or to help you track which articles you have used in your own planning. I use these each week to inform my planning and for display purposes so my children can see and read which article we are focusing on this week. Further information: https://www.unicef.org.uk/what-we-do/un-convention-child-rights/ Here is the PDF where I used the phrasings of the UN convention of the rights of the child: https://www.unicef.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/UNCRC_summary-1_1.pdf

5 senses based adjective mat

This resource is one that I use often on my tables to encourage and build vocabulary in the children’s independent writing. This resource contains 8 different word mats which focus on building language and vocabulary skills based on the 5 different senses. It does not just focus on the senses as a whole but also focuses on how we can further describe them, for example separate mats for unpleasant and pleasant smells. These mats are both KS1 and KS2 friendly. They also use visuals to help reinforce which sense is being described.

This resource is very useful when you have a slow start and the children are coming in in random waves. This resource has 20 slides and its enough for a month’s morning starter for a Year 2 class. It has a Phase 5 handwriting focus and a simple maths focus of either place value, counting in 10’s or number bonds.

My students love these slides! These slides are very useful for a slow start and are a way for children to practise their handwriting independently as they begin the school day. I use these as children enter my classroom in dribs and drabs. They copy each letter, word and sentence 3 times before writing their own independent sentences.
